View this Question In PYQ RealmIntroduction
The Circum-Pacific Zone, popularly known as the "Ring of Fire," is a 40,000-kilometer horseshoe-shaped belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, characterized by intense tectonic and volcanic activity.
Body
Geophysical Characteristics:
- Geographical Location: It forms a continuous chain of active volcanoes stretching along the western coasts of North and South America, across the Aleutian Islands, down through Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and into New Zealand.
- Tectonic Formation: The zone is shaped by active plate boundaries (convergent, divergent, and transform). The subduction of oceanic plates beneath lighter continental or island arc plates drives this intense geological activity.
- Hot Spot Volcanism: It hosts numerous volcanic hot spots where deep mantle plumes melt the crust to form active volcanoes, such as Mount Fuji (Japan), Krakatoa (Indonesia), and the Aleutian volcanic chain.
- Seismic and Volcanic Concentration: The Ring of Fire contains over 75% of the world's active and dormant volcanoes and is the site of 90% of global earthquakes, including the most severe seismic events.
Conclusion
As the primary locus of global volcanism and seismicity, the Circum-Pacific Belt is of paramount importance for studying the Earth's interior dynamics and plate tectonics.
